Radio Talk 2011

Radio Talk 2011 is in the books.  The first event held by WIARC which replaces it's annual hamfest was an overall success.  There were some problems but, they were mitigated by some very interesting speakers and a cool display or old AM radios dating back to the beginning of the 20th century.

It was a pleasure to be the first of the speakers and from the feedback I have been getting people liked the presentation.  I was asked to send a copy of the slide show for posting on the Radio Talk blog.  And I have done so, you should see it soon on the site.

Of all the presentations, I have to say the one on Microwave was the most interesting to me.  It was well presented, very well presented by Jim VE2JWH.  It was interesting to learn about the propagation modes used in this radio format.  I never knew that rain could be used as a means of propagating a signal, not to mention bouncing a signal off of buildings etc.

The other feature was the display section.  I listened to CJAD on a radio that dates back to 1932.  Unlike today's radios you had to use not one but three tuning knobs to tune the signal in.  The Solder Spot crew also showed off their skills, VE2OFH Paul, had a couple of antennas on display and was recruiting for the next project, a 40M receiver.  For more info on the Solder Spot you can go to http://www.solderspot.ca/forum/index.php or to http://www.solderspot.ca to say hi or jump in with your own ideas for the next project.

From my vantage point I think this is the way to go.  Hamfests and flea markets are fun but, a conference like this is really innovative and needed.  The idea is to bring talented and interested people together to talk about subjects related to ham radio.  The concept worked and I think it is a great way to bring the radio and non radio communities together.  Nicely done WIARC.
